- ➤ A man who intervened in a fight between his wife and a coworker was shot at a recycling center around 6:10 a.m.—police said the incident followed an argument between two employees that turned violent. WFMY
- ➤ Greensboro police are searching for missing 14-year-old Neveah Williams, last seen on Jan. 20 wearing a black jacket and black jeans — she has waist-length black-blue braids, carried two bookbags, and is 5’2 and 165 pounds. WXII 12
- ➤ Greensboro Police arrested a second suspect in the January 28 Baker Drive shooting when they took 19-year-old King K’Sean Jeawells Draughon into custody on Sunday—he faces felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm into occupied property, conspiracy, discharging a firearm inside city limits, and possession of stolen property as the investigation continues. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UNCG’s School of Nursing launched its new PELMSN program last October to allow individuals with college degrees to become nurses faster—15 students are enrolled in the first class. These students, including experienced healthcare workers and adults in their 20s to 40s, attend classes Monday to Friday until spring break and the program will add 40 to 50 new students in January. - ➤ UNC Greensboro will host George Smith, Ph.D.—a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry—for a free lecture on phage display and its role in developing new medicines on Wednesday, March 19 at 5:30 p.m. The talk is part of the Syngenta Symposium hosted by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Department of Biology. - ➤ A six-inch water main break in Greensboro left 20 people without water and closed several roads—West Florida Street is shut from Wildwood Drive to Rowe Street and West Court Street is closed from West Florida Street to Gate City Boulevard. City crews are working on repairs that are expected to finish by 5pm. WXII 12
- ➤ Greensboro City Manager Trey Davis said on March 17 that the 'Road to 10,000' plan will build thousands of new homes in coming years and a working group is reviewing city regulations to remove development barriers. Council member Sharon Hightower warned that the plan should not solely benefit developers — community forums and a new website will provide updates soon. WFDD
- ➤ USDA announced cuts of more than $1 billion from programs that support local food banks and school meals, with over $470 million and about $660 million removed from key funding sources. Local food banks and Guilford County Schools warned the loss of funds may reduce access to fresh nutrition—raising concerns for local families and farmers. ABC45
- ➤ A new North Carolina bill HB411 filed Monday aims to shorten early voting for primaries and special elections from 17 days to 6 days. If passed, early voting will begin on the second Monday before an election and end at 3 p.m. on the last Saturday before the election — the change will take effect Jan. 1 for the upcoming primaries.
