  • Today, Guilford County Animal Control offers free rabies vaccines, microchip vouchers, pet supplies and food assistance at Gate City Baptist Church from noon to 4 p.m. Upcoming community events include a litter sweep and a Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony on March 29, a county budget session at Jamestown Elementary on April 1, a book signing at GTCC on April 2, a history program at the Jamestown Public Library on April 3 and a 5K fun run on April 5 — all inviting local residents to join in.  YES!   • Members of the Greensboro Newcomers Club celebrated its 71st birthday with an Unbirthday Luncheon on March 18 at Greensboro County Club, where 96 members dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland enjoyed games, raffles and a buffet meal. Club president Lorraine Entz recognized long-time members and highlighted that the club continues to offer networking opportunities for those experiencing recent life changes.  YES! Weekly

  • Greensboro native Tony Brown — a country music producer whose work includes hits by Vince Gill and Reba McEntire — was named on Tuesday as one of three inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame and will be inducted in the fall alongside June Carter and Kenny Chesney.  WFMY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNCG Research and Engagement will hold the 2025 ResearchCON from April 3 to April 10 in Greensboro — an event that brings together faculty, research scholars and students to showcase research, creative scholarship and community engagement. The week-long conference will offer keynote sessions, workshops and panel discussions — including an AI for Business session at 8:30 a.m. on April 3 and a Graduate Research and Creativity Showcase at 1:00 p.m.  UNCG
  • Dr. Robert Wiley, an assistant professor in psychology, received the UNCG Thomas Undergraduate Research Mentor Award in the pre-tenure category for his mentorship of 35 undergraduates in his lab since 2019—his work on reading and writing cognition is recognized as a model of effective research guidance.  UNCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two firefighters from the Triad joined over 300 crews to fight three wildfires in Polk County, where a red flag warning remains, over 5500 acres have burned, and hundreds of people were evacuated. Their brush truck carrying 250 gallons of water arrived Tuesday and they plan to stay until Monday—officials will review the need for more support next week.  WXII 12
  • Greensboro City Council member Marikay Abuzuaiter announced her plan to run for mayor in 2025 after Mayor Nancy Vaughn said she would not seek re-election—Abuzuaiter has been on the City Council since 2011 and served as Mayor Pro Tempore since January when she filled the role after the late Yvonne Johnson. She said she will work on housing, public safety, and infrastructure improvements—she will file her candidacy on July 7.  WFMY

  • Greensboro is planning to add 10,000 homes by 2030 to meet a growing population surge. City Manager Trey Davis said community forums will begin in about 30 days to gather local feedback on a multi-million dollar plan to streamline permitting and zoning — a move designed to boost both affordable and market-value housing options.  ABC45
