CULTURE NEWS

  • Worshipers at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Greensboro prayed Monday evening for Pope Francis’ soul after the Vatican announced his death that morning, and many recalled his kind leadership. Pastor Casey Coleman said the church held a Holy Hour and will host more events later this week (including a mass tomorrow at 12:15 p.m.) to honor his legacy.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Greensboro should expect road and sidewalk closures this week as crews prepare to demolish the Bellemeade Street parking deck (closed earlier due to structural issues). Duke Energy removed light poles on North Greene Street while city officials discuss redevelopment plans.  WXII 12
  • Downtown Greensboro began demolition on its largest parking deck because a 2022 report found it unsafe—officials say road closures will last eight months. Visitors may need to find alternative parking during this time.  WFMY
  • Carrie Conley, the wife of a U.S. Army soldier from Guilford County, is fighting to have her vote counted in the NC Supreme Court race after her ballot was challenged for not including a photo ID — she insists the rule should not have applied as military and overseas voters were once exempt. Conley and other voters filed a group lawsuit on April 14 to challenge the new rule, and local election officials are now checking records to decide what happens next.  News & Record
  • Guilford County government unveiled its new website on April 21 in partnership with the NC Department of Information Technology to offer easier navigation, enhanced accessibility with a button for 16 languages, and more online services for residents. County Manager Mike Halford said the mobile-first site loads faster and meets digital accessibility standards—making it a pilot for hosting other local government sites in the future.  Rhino Times
  • On Wednesday, the Guilford County Planning Board will present its updated comprehensive plan at the Old Guilford County Courthouse, outlining goals for attainable housing, future land use, and economic initiatives to invite public feedback. Officials will also request budget comments and urge residents to submit questions online ahead of the rescheduled town hall on Monday, April 28th.  WFDD

  • Cone Health will open its new Steven D. Bell Family Heart & Vascular Center in Greensboro on April 28. The five-story center covers 156,000 square feet and will serve about 120,000 patients a year with new equipment and services—Cone Health spent eight years planning the $100 million project.  WXII 12
