COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Demolition of the Bellemeade Street Parking Deck in downtown Greensboro began May 1 after the deck closed in February when a safety report found flawed materials, and the process will take several months—drivers should expect delays and visitors now use nearby parking decks at Church Street and Marriott Hotel.  WFMY

CULTURE NEWS

  • John Swaine, CEO of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, said the Smithsonian is not removing the Greensboro sit-in artifacts from the National Museum of American History or the National Museum of African American History, and a statement from the museums confirms the historic displays remain on view—no notifications have been sent to the original museum.  WFMY
  • The Arts Council of Greater Greensboro announced on May 1 that it is accepting applications for Artist Support Grants for 2025-2026 – the application portal opens on June 2 and the deadline is September 5 – and Zoom workshops will be held on Monday, June 9 from 12:00-1:00 p.m., Monday, July 14 from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and Monday, August 11 from 12:00-1:00 p.m.  YES! EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNCG's Women2Women Self Defense club held hands-on workshops at the Kaplan Center yesterday, where students practiced techniques like escaping a choke and breaking a grip — methods that build real confidence. The club also hosted situational awareness talks and partnered with local groups — supporting women's safety and unity on campus.  UNCG
  • Angie Young, the new family engagement coordinator at Parkview Village, said parent involvement has doubled—an increase that she believes will boost academic success at the school.  WFMY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy City Manager Chris Wilson announced his retirement on Tuesday, April 29 after serving Greensboro for 33 years—he began his work in June 1992 and held many roles. He said he would finish strong in the coming months while city leaders expressed their deep thanks for his service.  Rhino Times
  • David Churchill has been appointed to fill the Guilford County Clerk of Superior Court vacancy and will assume the role when Lisa Johnson-Tonkins is sworn in as a Superior Court Judge next month. He brings extensive legal experience from serving as clerk from 1998 to 2014 + working as an assistant public defender and district attorney.  YES! Weekly
  • The state Senate approved a controversial Medicaid work requirement bill that could affect nearly 200,000 NC beneficiaries + similar measures were ruled unconstitutional earlier. Lawmakers say the bill will face legal challenges before it is put in place.  News & Record
  • On May 1, Keep Gate City Housed urged Guilford County commissioners to expand legal help and rental assistance programs to reduce evictions, noting that only 10% of tenants had lawyers compared to most landlords. The group said that better tenant support would lower eviction costs—saving money and keeping families in their homes.  Rhino Times
