ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Christopher Hammonds died on May 2nd when a vehicle driven by Robert Lynn Faison Jr ran off US 29 while he and his fiancée changed a flat tire—his fiancée suffered life-threatening injuries—and family members remember him as a glow stick whose spirit urged caution; Faison faces charges for driving while impaired. - ➤ Alumna Chloe Siegel ’24 will deliver her commencement speech at UNCG’s Lloyd International Honors College this spring to encourage students to appreciate each moment—she will highlight her local campaign work and decision to pursue political science while looking forward to further studies in London. - ➤ Guilford County is hosting two community mental health resource fairs in May to connect residents with local support services. The first fair will be held at First Presbyterian Church in High Point on May 17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the second at the County Behavioral Health Center in Greensboro on May 30 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (the county is also preparing two new recovery centers to offer long-term care). - ➤ North Carolina's fallen officers and their families were honored Tuesday at the 40th Peace Officers’ Memorial Day ceremony. Eight officers were recognized for their sacrifices in 2024 — Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan was shot and killed two days before Christmas while responding to a call about an armed man at a grocery store — and four others lost their lives in an April ambush in Charlotte. - ➤ Greensboro city leaders announced plans to improve East Vandalia Road by widening the two-lane road to three lanes with added sidewalks, bike lanes, and curbs to make travel safer for cars, bikes, and pedestrians. The project, delayed by design reviews and flood map changes, will begin construction in 2027 and be completed in 2028 — officials ask residents to remain patient as work progresses. ABC45
- ➤ On May 6, 2025, Attorney General Jeff Jackson and the North Carolina Justice Academy held the 40th Peace Officers’ Memorial Day Ceremony in Raleigh to honor officers who died in the line of duty — including Greensboro Police Department’s Michael Horan—and their families, while guest speaker Russ Ferguson highlighted their sacrifice.
