COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ed Matthews (retiring after 38 years) will host two pet supply drives at Guilford County Animal Services on Guilford College Road. The drives are scheduled for Wednesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 20 from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to help pets in need.  WFMY
  • Nearly 50 restaurants are donating a portion of their sales to Potter's House Community Kitchen run by Greensboro Urban Ministry to support food bank needs in Greensboro.  WFMY
  • After a WFMY News 2 report, a local couple in High Point donated 400 items to Open Door Ministries + helped ease food shortages at a pantry that serves over 800 people. The facility saw supplies drop after a spoiled shipment and remains in need of additional donations.  WFMY
  • Mungo Homes volunteers rebuilt a ramp for veterans at Veterans Helping Veterans Heal in Winston-Salem on Wednesday as part of their fifth annual Week of Service running May 4-8. Other events include meal packing with Forsyth Backpack and mural painting at Youth Focus in Greensboro.  ABC45

  • Travis Bowman (a 7th-generation descendant of Revolutionary War hero Peter Francisco) is set to film a nine-episode miniseries titled LUSO in select Piedmont Triad locations using period-correct sites; the production company will launch its funding campaign on WeFunder around July 4th.  YES!   • The America 250 Guilford Time Capsule dedication was held on April 18 at the High Point Museum as community members, reenactors, and officials celebrated local history and patriotism. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lah 'Swee' Paw, a first-generation college graduate from UNCG, is set to graduate today and will start co-teaching Kindergarten in Durham this fall—her practicum at Davis Elementary built her leadership skills. Her transformation from an introvert to a classroom leader reflects a journey of growing confidence and community connection.  UNCG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crossroads Treatment Center of Greensboro PC reached a settlement that fined the clinic for billing Medicaid for urinary drug tests improperly between 2019 and 2023 * state officials noted the agreement resolved the claims issue.  News & Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • The North Carolina High School Athletic Association approved adding girls flag football and boys volleyball, setting the flag football championship for late 2026 and the volleyball championship for May 2027, expanding athletic opportunities for local high schools (districts like Guilford County are already preparing for both sports).  WFMY
