  • Ed Matthews has launched the Rescue Supply Drive now underway in Greensboro to support his favorite cause. The drive welcomes donations now and forms part of his final efforts before retirement.  WFMY
  • Hundreds attended the tenth annual Blue Jeans & Boots fundraiser at the Petty Family Foundation (raising funds for schools and veterans) in Trinity, where community members showed their support for education and service organizations.  WFMY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Greensboro business owner is keeping gas prices low at his Shell station on Summit Avenue by offering regular gas at $3.99 per gallon, below the county average. The station soft launched last week and its grand opening is expected later this week—helping drivers battle rising fuel costs.  WFMY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Alamance Battleground State Historic Site near Burlington will host a re-enactment of the 1771 Battle of Alamance on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — the re-enactment starts at 11 a.m. with a guided tour at 3 p.m.; admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children, seniors and military.  YES!   • Greensboro hosts a busy week, beginning with live music by Camel City Yacht Club at First National Bank Field on May 15, a Greenway ribbon cutting at Cairn’s Course on May 16, and ending with AtriumLive featuring UCON Songwriters Collective on May 20.  YES! Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Guilford Metro 9-1-1 released a 16-page report showing that it answered 99.9% of over 600,000 calls last year and saved 53 lives, and it will upgrade its 30-year-old dispatch system in February.  WFDD
  • Drivers using the I-40 West/U.S. 29 offramp at Exit 221 to South Elm-Eugene Street must plan for closures every Sunday through Thursday night until Friday, June 5. The ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. with a detour via Exit 220 & Randleman Road.  ABC45
  • Greensboro Police Chief Kamran Afzal was sworn in Tuesday and is hosting community meetings at six venues (Peeler Recreation Center, Barber Park Event Center, Brown Recreation Center, Leonard Recreation Center, Lindley Recreation Center, and Guilford Park Presbyterian Church) to gather ideas on public safety; the meetings are on June 4, 8, 15, 22, 25, and 29, each from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.  WXII 12
