- ➤ Downtown Greenway is opening Saturday in Greensboro with music and food trucks, marking a 25-year effort to create a new space for local families. The celebration will bring neighbors together in a vibrant downtown setting. News & Record
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ NC A&T has received a $4.5 million grant from the Gates Foundation to help over 17,000 former students complete their degrees. The university will soon offer more flexible course options through its Forever Learning Initiative on campus. WFDD
- ➤ PBS North Carolina is hosting the Rootle Roadster Tour at the Greensboro Science Center on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event offers STEM experiments, literacy games, and social-emotional activities for children eight and under (plus NC 529 savings information). WFDD
- ➤ Sofia Aguilar, a UNCG printmaking and drawing student from Kernersville, uses her Mexican heritage to inspire art that features Aztec imagery and unique characters. She completed a residency in the Netherlands and plans to teach, sharing her creative journey with future artists. UNCG
- ➤ UNCG received a $2 million award to launch NC BioMISSION, a bioindustrial training and research program that will offer a self-paced certificate in January 2027 at iCOMMAND (the university’s research institute). UNCG
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State regulators are considering a voluntary plan to monitor PFAS & 1,4 dioxane discharges from facilities, including those that could impact local water systems. Public comment is open until June 15 as critics warn the approach may not protect drinking water. WFDD
- ➤ The EPA has proposed eliminating vehicle emissions testing in Forsyth, Guilford and 17 other counties as the public comment period ends in June + the change is intended to reflect current vehicle technology and maintain federal air quality standards. WFDD
- ➤ Wildlife officials say growing black bear sightings are typical for the season in the Piedmont (including Rockingham and Reidsville). The agency advises residents to secure trash and food to help reduce encounters. WFMY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State numbers show thousands fewer people are receiving SNAP benefits compared to this time last year — local Triad leaders and nonprofits are monitoring the trend to see how the change may affect food assistance in the area. WFMY
- ➤ Greensboro Police Chief Kamran Afzal will host community meetings in June at six sites—including Peeler Recreation Center on June 4 and Guilford Park Presbyterian Church on June 29—with sessions running 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; residents can join to ask questions and learn about department plans.
