- ➤ An officer-involved shooting by State Troopers closed parts of I-85 South on May 15 after officers pulled over a speeding vehicle near mile marker 118—when a male passenger fired shots as a female driver said she was assaulted—and police later pursued the suspect for eight miles until he was captured and hospitalized in critical condition while the woman and troopers remained unharmed. - ➤ Guilford County Schools is proposing to close four elementary schools—Madison, Southern, Vandalia, and Washington—over the next two academic years because low enrollment has reduced the district's capacity and will save $1.7 million in operating costs annually; a public hearing on the plan will be held on June 10.
