COMMUNITY NEWS

  • South Greensboro residents met at the Brown Recreation Center to plan changes for an eight-mile-square area bounded by I-40 and I-85 with Randleman Road running through the middle. They gave feedback on plans for transportation, parks, and green spaces and city officials will hold more workshops this summer to shape the draft.  ABC45
  • The 4th annual Sunshine 5K & Family Festival will occur Saturday, May 31st at Country Park below the Greensboro Science Center parking lot at 3905 Nathanial Greene Drive. Families can enjoy a walk/run, a kids 100 yard dash, food trucks, music, vendors and a firetruck display while race registration is $40 for ages 12+ and $15 for ages 6-11, with free admission to the festival.  WXII 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police said the northbound lanes of Fleming Road at Bryan Boulevard are closed due to a crash that injured people—drivers are urged to avoid the area and authorities have not provided a reopening timetable.  WXII 12

CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old Massachusetts college student will plead guilty to charges of cyber extortion, unauthorized access to protected computers and aggravated identity theft after hacking PowerSchool’s system that manages data for over 1.5 million students and nearly 100,000 teachers in North Carolina—state officials said the breach put millions of personal records at risk and his plea hearing has not been scheduled.  Spectrum News 1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Guilford Technical Community College will launch a new biotechnology program this fall to prepare students for jobs in local biomanufacturing companies — the program is capped at 24 students and classes begin on Aug. 14 in existing biology labs.  FOX 8
  • The state spent over $432 million on private school vouchers this year to help nearly 80,000 students, nearly $250 million more and more than twice as many recipients than last year. In the Triad, Guilford County added 2,600 Opportunity Scholarship students while Forsyth County doubled its spending from $10 million to more than $23 million — Gov. Josh Stein had urged the legislature to cut the program, but it remains unchanged.  WFDD

  • Funds are being raised to improve the Guilford County Veterans Memorial by adding new flags for each armed branch and receiving a decommissioned Huey helicopter from the N.C. Vietnam Helicopter Pilot Association + the upgrades follow damage from Tropical Storm Debby last August. A Memorial Day ceremony will be held this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Greensboro to explain the plans.  WFDD
