CRIME NEWS

  • Greensboro police identified three suspects (Jaylen Sawyer, Traevon Wilson, and Markese Taliaferro) in connection with the 2024 Culture Lounge shooting that left two dead and one injured; Sawyer faces charges including first-degree murder, Wilson admitted to driving him away and had his bond raised to $3 million, and Taliaferro was later killed in a related drive-by shooting.  ABC45
  • A Greensboro man named Sean Smith, 29, was arrested after he allegedly tried to strangle an Uber driver with a seatbelt on May 3 and attacked a security officer when the driver stopped at a bus center—he faces multiple assault charges and posted secured bonds on May 19.  FOX 8

  • Jose Analco Ramirez, a Greensboro man, bought a $20 scratch-off ticket at Circle K on New Garden Road and later won the NC Education Lottery’s $2 million top prize—he chose a lump sum of $1.2 million, received $861,006 after taxes, and said he plans to invest his winnings and possibly start a business.  WFMY
  • Leslie Loyd worked with MBA students from the Bryan School to build a database that shows which local nonprofits and businesses are donating food and details pickup times and locations. The project collected research from three community partners (including a restaurant franchise with untapped locations) to address gaps in Guilford County’s food distribution.  UNCG

  • At a Salisbury roundtable, Congressman Addison McDowell vowed to fight the fentanyl crisis after losing his brother to an overdose—lawmakers, prosecutors and grieving families demanded tougher laws and better coordination as Barbara Walsh shared how her daughter died from a water bottle containing eight nanograms of fentanyl.  WFMY
  • The state now offers Saturday walk-in DMV services at 20 offices starting today until Aug 23—excluding June 28 and July 5—and customers can handle driver's license renewals, ID card orders, address changes, REAL ID issuances and road tests. The Greensboro office at 2391 Coliseum Blvd is open from 8 a.m. to noon with no appointment necessary.  WXII 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Cleveland Clinic reports that over 300,000 breast implant procedures are performed in the U.S. each year and finds that implants may interfere with echocardiograms used to diagnose heart disease in women—possibly leading to more invasive tests with negative results. Greensboro hypertension specialist Dr. Veita Bland advises women with implants to get regular maintenance exams to detect issues early.  Carolina Peacemaker
