CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On March 13, authorities executed a search warrant at a Greensboro residence as part of a major narcotics investigation—seizing 385 grams of cocaine, 353 grams of fentanyl and two firearms—and arrested 33-year-old Brandon Lamont Bates, who was federally indicted on May 28 and is now held without bond on charges of drug trafficking and firearm possession. - ➤ Masud H. Chowdhury, Ph.D. was named the new dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and will serve as a professor of nanoengineering, with his role beginning Aug. 15. He replaces interim dean Mitchell Croatt after a national search by NC A&T and UNCG sought to strengthen research and education in Greensboro (Chowdhury previously served as a founding director at UMKC). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Guilford County Schools leaders requested $947 million from Guilford County to support operating and maintaining schools for the next school year, and a public hearing is being held today at 5:30 p.m. at the Old County Courthouse on Market Street in Greensboro—where commissioners will decide on a budget that includes funds for pay increases, mandatory expense rises, safety measures, and facility repairs; Superintendent Dr. Whitney Oakley warned that without these funds further cuts to programs and athletics may occur. - ➤ Guilford County’s school construction program is projected to cost taxpayers over $3.2 billion in total debt service, including about $1.2 billion in interest, as payments on $2 billion in bonds extend through 2052—spreading the debt over nearly three decades. The county’s current fiscal plan uses dedicated property and sales tax revenues to fund these projects while future bond issuances and additional measures are expected to support further school improvements.
