COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City leaders in Greensboro unveiled a new five-year community safety plan on Friday at the Simkins Sports Pavilion (called Peace on Purpose) to align with National Gun Violence Awareness Day by connecting families with needed support programs. The plan focuses on preventing and interrupting violence (setting clear steps and progress measures for local partners).  WXII 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Breeze Airways made its first flight from Piedmont Triad International Airport Friday afternoon—departing for Hartford. The airline will offer non-stop flights to Hartford and Orlando on Mondays and Fridays—with one-way tickets starting at $39.  WXII 12

CRIME NEWS

  • A judge in Guilford County heard evidence on Benjamin Cole (47)'s motion to overturn his 1998 conviction for the murder of Calvin Jenkins in Greensboro last month. Two key witnesses recanted their earlier identification (May 22) and the prosecution said the defense used flawed testimony, while Judge Susan Bray will decide in a few weeks.  News & Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers and students at Oak Ridge Elementary held a special graduation for 11 year old Kiara Hemnani who has battled cancer for over a year and missed her regular ceremony because of treatment appointments. Kiara walked the stage to a standing ovation Friday and was honored for her jump rope skills — she will travel to the Mayo Clinic next week for more treatment.  WXII 12
  • Guilford County Schools will serve free breakfast and lunch for kids at select locations from June 23 until Aug. 14—breakfast is available from 8 to 9 a.m. while lunch is served from 11 a.m. to noon, with no meals provided from June 30 to July 4 or on Fridays.  WXII 12

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Guilford College and Piedmont Land Conservancy have signed a memorandum of understanding to protect 120 acres on campus — including a 300-year-old tulip poplar known as the Underground Railroad tree. The college plans to raise $8.5 million by 2028 to fund the easement that keeps the land undeveloped and links it to the city’s trail network.  FOX 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Educators, bus drivers and food service workers rallied last Thursday to ask for an extra $43 million in operational funding for Guilford County Schools during ongoing budget talks. County officials, who have set aside $2.1 million for charter school growth, will meet on June 10 and 12 and plan to adopt the budget on June 18—officials say new funding sources or a tax increase may be necessary.  ABC45
  • On June 5, Governor Stein warned NC that federal budget cuts may force state and local governments to shoulder extra costs if FEMA staffing is reduced—he said stronger partnerships are needed during hurricane season and urged residents to verify social media information.  ABC45
