COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greensboro Urban Ministry has opened cooling sites to help people stay safe during very high heat and teamed up with four churches — including Guilford Park Presbyterian—to offer shelter, water and social services. The nonprofit will keep its doors open all year to meet the growing need as temperatures rise.  FOX 8
  • Today, the Greensboro Fire Department hosts Camp Spark, a five-day camp that teaches female empowerment, leadership and basic firefighting skills to young women.   • State lawmakers have set aside $450 million for the JetZero project—funds that will support building a new manufacturing plant at Piedmont Triad International Airport where JetZero will create at least 14,560 jobs and make a $4.7 billion capital investment over 10 years. CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded to a Friday night shooting outside FireHouse TapRoom in Archdale and found 31-year-old Chad Ryan Senters with gunshot wounds who was taken to Moses Cone Hospital in critical condition—authorities charged 26-year-old James Austin Monahan from Greensboro with assault with a deadly weapon intended to kill and set his bond at $500,000 as the investigation continues.  WFMY

  • Brandy and Monica will headline a new tour that will bring them to First Horizon Coliseum on November 1, after the tour kicks off in Cincinnati on October 15. The tour — which stops in the Midwest and South and features Grammy winners Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and American Idol Season 23 winner Jamal Roberts — celebrates their hit and lasting legacy.  WFMY

  • Today, the Triad will face record heat with temperatures near the upper 90s and a heat index topping 105—scattered thunderstorms may develop in the early afternoon with stronger downbursts later possibly causing wind damage and localized flooding, and meteorologists expect the best severe weather chance between 4 p.m. and midnight.  WXII 12

  • City officials will hold a community open house on June 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at The Depot Waiting Room on E.
