Good morning, Greensboro.
Greensboro’s Department of Community Safety unveiled a five-year plan to reduce violent crime that brings law enforcement, community stakeholders, schools, and local groups together for monthly safety meetings and new support programs.
The plan is set to start by October after homicides dropped from 74 to 44 in 2023-2024 while handgun assaults climbed from 1062 to 1257.
North Carolina will enact new laws starting July 1st—raising auto insurance liability limits, adding underinsured motorist coverage, and requiring human trafficking reporting procedures for vacation rentals.
The changes also ban noncompete agreements for workers earning under $75,000—and impose a tax on taxi and rideshare services with rates of 1.5% for exclusive rides and 1% for share rides.
City officials in Greensboro have reviewed complaints about potholes, detours, and missing sidewalks along Gate City Boulevard from Elm Street to I-40 and are starting a study to gather public input for improvements — residents want more pedestrian and bike access.
Recommendations will be shared with the public later this summer or early fall.
On Saturday, an 8-inch water main break closed both southbound lanes and one northbound lane of Yanceyville Street between Cone Boulevard and 16th Street, leaving about 100 customers without service—city crews expected to complete repairs by 12 a.m.
