ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday morning, a crash on Interstate 40 East in Greensboro closed the two left lanes between Mile Marker 221 and Mile Marker 220 near Exit 221 for South Elm Eugene Street — traffic backed up along the highway — and officials said the cause remains undetermined. FOX 8
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Graham police arrested Michael DeAngelo Paylor (34) on Thursday after a weekend shooting on Sarah Williams Avenue that left a victim (36) with life-threatening injuries; he is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon and is held at Alamance County Detention Center with no bond. - ➤ Hundreds of former Dudley High School students will gather this weekend in Greensboro to honor the school’s legacy from segregation by sharing memories, joining community service projects and a Sunday picnic—marking 50 years of the alumni association—while reflecting on how their teachers inspired them to excel. - ➤ On Tuesday, July 8, the City Council named Deputy City Attorney Lora Cubbage as Greensboro's new city attorney — she takes charge after Chuck Watts retired and brings experience as a prosecutor, judge, and assistant attorney general — and will now lead the city’s legal department. Rhino Times
- ➤ Today the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said it is looking into an unnamed city council member and stressed the probe is not linked to the inquiry of former City Attorney Chuck Watts. Many locals suspect the investigation may focus on Councilmember Zack Matheny because of questions over his work with Downtown Greensboro Inc. — Matheny did not answer requests for comment and has filed to run again. - ➤ City officials said that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation began an independent review of business transactions from former City Attorney Chuck Watts’ time in office—after he abruptly stepped down—and the police are acting as a liaison with the SBI, which will decide if further action is needed.
