ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday in Greensboro, Yordy Ortiz-Cabreja, 26, died in a crash on US 29 near Phillips Avenue when his BMW 335i went off the road, hit the shoulder guardrail, and struck a bridge—police, firefighters, and EMS arrived at 5:47 a.m.  FOX 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Daimler Truck North America, LLC in Mt. Holly notified the state on July 11 it will lay off 573 workers due to fewer orders and slower production—most of the affected are 445 truck assemblers, and the workers will keep their jobs until July 18 with regular pay until Sept 9.  Spectrum News 1

CRIME NEWS

  • Tracey Hernandez was indicted for second-degree murder in Alamance County Superior Court after she hit and killed 18-year-old Lily Hahn on June 2 near Greensboro Chapel Hill Road, admitting she had tequila before driving on a revoked license while three children in her car remain hospitalized.  WXII 12
  • Officers responded to an aggravated assault around 3 p.m. on July 14 on the 1600 block of Sunrise Valley Drive (near Highway 29 and Phillips Avenue) and are investigating the incident.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greensboro city leaders are repurposing the former Regency Inn on North O’Henry Boulevard into 114 affordable living units for seniors and families — the project will be built in two phases at an estimated cost of $30 million and will offer rents at 30%, 50%, and 60% of the area’s median income.  WXII 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Carolina had the 10th-highest infant mortality rate in 2023 as Black infants died at three times the rate of white infants, according to a state report. State health officials and local programs in the Piedmont Triad are expanding care for moms and babies – an effort to address ongoing health disparities.  FOX 8
