  • Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department will host a Speed Friending event on Friday, July 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at LoFi Park (500 N. Eugene St.), where participants will answer icebreaker questions and may continue socializing at Joymongers (next door).  Rhino Times

CRIME NEWS

  • A Greensboro man, Jut Kopa, 27, was charged with first-degree murder after his 52-year-old mother was found dead in their home on Monday afternoon during a welfare check on Sunrise Valley Drive—neighbors said he usually kept to himself—and he remains in detention without bond as he awaits a court appearance on Sept. 3.  WXII 12
  • On Monday, Greensboro police did a welfare check and found 52-year-old Nhoan Kopa dead in an upstairs bathroom; they arrested her 27-year-old son, Jut Kopa, on first-degree murder charges — officers were also called to the 1600 block of Sunrise Valley Drive for a reported assault with no further updates.  ABC45
  • Greensboro detectives charged a suspect on Monday in the death of a 52-year-old woman—officials said they are not seeking any additional suspects.  News & Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Greensboro officials warned that sinkholes are forming after heavy rainfall dropped recently, causing water rescues, a washed-out driveway and damage to a water treatment plant. Authorities urge drivers to avoid flooded roads & never drive if barricades are set & follow all safety warnings.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday, the Greensboro City Council voted 9-0 to rezone a 6.6-acre property at West Friendly Avenue and Hobbs Road for a new mixed-use development featuring retail space, a boutique hotel, and an underground Bee Safe Storage facility. Roy Carroll, founder of the Carroll Companies, said the project is designed to attract high-end small shops, reduce traffic, and a groundbreaking date will be announced soon.  FOX 8
  • The Greensboro City Council named Lora Cubbage city attorney on July 8 with a contract that limits outside work by requiring written approval for extra employment—this change aims to prevent issues seen with her predecessor; the city has also declined to release emails about Cyberlux as an ongoing SBI review of former attorney Chuck Watts’ business dealings continues.  News & Record
