Good morning, Greensboro.
The Piedmont Triad Farmers Market holds Watermelon Day today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2914 Sandy Ridge Road (visitors can sample watermelons and meet North Carolina Watermelon Queen Elizabeth Steinlage) while local farmers showcase details of a $48.4 million watermelon industry.
Greensboro filmmaker Brannon Carty completed his documentary An Unlikely Fandom about grownups who love Thomas the Tank Engine, and the film will have its U.K. premiere in August at a national celebration of 200 years of British railway history.
Carty began the project as a class assignment at UNCG and raised funds on Kickstarter while working as a freelance video editor downtown.
The Guilford County Board of Education voted on July 23 to name its new visual and performing arts elementary school Peeler-Hampton Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School.
The school will open in the fall on Randall Road at the site of the tornado-destroyed Peeler Open Elementary and honors Rev. Silas Peeler and Dr. William Hampton.
On July 11, Judge Sean Jordan ruled that the plan to stop most medical debt from appearing on credit reports was not allowed—leaving hundreds of consumers in Forsyth and Guilford counties, including many Greensboro residents, facing higher credit costs.
The decision means that the CFPB rule will not protect borrowers from medical bills affecting their credit scores.
Today, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office Community Resource Unit offers the Yellow Dot Program — a tool that places key medical and personal details in a vehicle or on a refrigerator to help first responders when communication is hard.
Residents can call Sergeant C. Stephens at 336-641-5313 for more information.
