COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mount Zion Baptist Church — with a 125-year legacy in our community — will lead a new project on nearly 50 acres in southeast Greensboro that will include a 40,000-square-foot medical office building in a deal with Novant Health and hundreds of new homes for seniors and families. Bishop Bryan J. Pierce Sr. said work will begin in six to 12 months — with plans that include a fellowship hall, townhomes, a senior center and a walking trail — and full development will be completed over the next five years.  News & Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Roy Carnell Brown II, 33, was arrested Monday after a Guilford County grand jury indicted him on charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree kidnapping in connection with the 2013 death of 72 year old Mildred Martin in Greensboro—police said.  FOX 8
  • A person was killed in an early morning shooting—on Phillips Avenue—in Greensboro.  WFMY
  • Guilford County police made a second arrest in the shooting death of a teen — Scott-Douglas is held on a $500,000 bond and Harrington is held with no bond — as part of an ongoing investigation.  News & Record

  • Former governor Roy Cooper announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2026 to replace retiring Senator Thom Tillis; he said his decision came after careful thought and prayer—he will focus on protecting and growing the middle class. The announcement follows Tillis’s decision not to run for re-election.  ABC45

HEALTH NEWS

  • Valleygate Dental Surgery Center in Greensboro reopened nearly two weeks after Er'Mias Mitchell died on July 17 from a collapsed lung following cavity surgery — his death is under investigation by his family and the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners. The center has not yet issued a statement on the incident.  WXII 12
