- ➤ Jordan Smith, a 19-year-old rising sophomore at NC State, led Jamestown Presbyterian Church’s Vacation Bible School from July 21 to 25 even while on crutches – she coordinated 30 volunteers and 50 children aged 4 to 12 who took part in Bible lessons, crafts, games, and water slides. Smith said the program revived Bible school in the community and she hopes to direct a themed event differently next year. YES! Weekly
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On July 29, around 5:15 p.m., officers and EMS went to the 1500 block of Hamilton Hills Drive near Alamance Church Road, where they found Greensboro man Wilmer Jones, 47, with a gunshot wound who later died at the hospital, and on Aug. 6, police arrested Ronald Robinson, 29, for first-degree murder—he is held without bond. - ➤ Officers responded to an aggravated assault call on the 6900 block of West Market Street on August 5 at 9:05 p.m.—they located a gunshot victim who was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. ABC45
- ➤ Tristan Wiles, 34, from Colfax was arrested after a hit-and-run crash on July 2 at 9 p.m. at the intersection of Skeet Club Road and Braddock Road in High Point that injured several passengers including four children and one adult, leading to a 6 year old's death on July 7, and he now faces further charges such as misdemeanor death by vehicle + speeding and careless driving. - ➤ Javeon Byers and his fiancé witnessed a hate crime near UNCG when a teenager spray painted racial slurs on a tunnel wall & brandished a gun, prompting police to respond around 10 p.m. while UNCG cooperates with the investigation. ABC45
- ➤ Two men are charged in connection with the shooting death of 19-year-old Joshua Smith-Cordoba, who was found with a gunshot wound to the chest in the Citgo parking lot on West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro—police said the shooting occurred just after 9 p.m. Tuesday and that he later died at the hospital. - ➤ The Teacher Supply Warehouse on Pomona Drive offers free classroom supplies to help teachers save money on back-to-school costs; teachers in Guilford County may visit the warehouse four times a year—only with a school ID and email as proof. - ➤ Guilford County Social Services Director Sharon Barlow said the new One Big Beautiful Law will cut federal funding for Medicaid and impose work requirements that may cause many local residents to lose needed health care and food aid.
