CRIME NEWS

  • Bennett College mourned Financial Aid officer Brianna Best Parker, 27, who died Tuesday night in Reidsville after suffering stab wounds — police arrested Ana Tonche-Garza with a $1 million bond and charged her with voluntary manslaughter.  WFMY
  • Authorities located an infant in Greensboro today after an Amber Alert was issued following the child's disappearance on Thursday night.  WFMY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Weatherspoon Art Museum will show Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice this fall from Sept. 6 to Nov. 29—featuring art that honors African-American leaders and detailing their cultural impact. The museum will also offer related programs such as Conversations in Black and artist talks to engage local audiences with Greensboro’s rich heritage.  UNCG
  • Today, the Greensboro History Museum and Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department host Little League Legends: Achievements of the 1965-68 Bluford Blues at 2 p.m. at the museum on Summit Ave to honor the undefeated Bluford Blues—who went 48-0 and became the first African American champions in the City Little League Tournament—and invite former players to share their stories.  Carolina Peacemaker

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Extended year classes began on August 5 and 6 while most schools will start on August 25 with open houses on August 19 for high schools, August 20 for middle schools, and August 21 for elementary schools. The district will hold ribbon-cutting ceremonies on August 18 at Kiser Middle at 402 Campus Drive — and at Peeler-Hampton Visual and Performing Arts Elementary at 2200 Randall Street in Greensboro.  Carolina Peacemaker
  • Greensboro native David Furr, recently nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for The Gilded Age, will begin teaching at UNC Greensboro next semester. He earned his Master of Fine Arts from the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and University of Alabama Professional Actor Training Program and has worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theaters, film and television—making him a strong addition to the faculty.  WFMY
  • Fifteen students and five faculty from N.C. A&T’s Visual and Performing Arts department will join a collaborative art exhibition with Tennessee State University from August 18 to September 11 at TSU’s Hiram Van Gordon Gallery—providing hands-on experience with curatorial practices and interactive discussions. A&T will also host events on August 29 that include a student-led talk and panel discussion with alumnus Herb Gray to highlight the university’s creative contributions.  Carolina Peacemaker

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 7, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners overturned a Planning Board decision and approved rezoning roughly 21 acres near Triple Lakes to allow more homes as part of local efforts to address a housing shortage. Several residents raised concerns about safety, traffic, and the environment — but county staff said the decision supports higher density development in the area.  Rhino Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • In 2023, Guilford County recorded 53 infant deaths among 5,757 births—70% of these were among Black infants. At a July 31 forum, local leaders stressed the need for improved prenatal care and systemic changes to reduce these disparities.  Carolina Peacemaker
