COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A child found wandering alone in a Greensboro mobile home park was reunited with parents — investigators are working to determine how the child became separated.  WFMY

CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday night, a person was hospitalized after a shooting on the 2300 block of East Market Street around 7:45 p.m. — police are investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to call Greensboro Crime Stoppers.  ABC45

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greensboro accepted a grant to hire more police officers + some council members said they want a renewed focus on community policing.  News & Record
  • City officials plan to widen Vandalia Road, adding sidewalks, bike lanes, and a center turn lane between South Elm Eugene Street and Pleasant Garden Road to improve safety. Work will begin in 2027 and finish in 2029—residents are invited to an open house Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at East Market Seventh-Day Adventist Church.  WXII 12
  • Jim Melvin, former mayor of Greensboro, died, and his leadership helped shape local sports events and community programs—he also served as chairman with the Greensboro Sports Foundation and supported bicycle giveaways at Gillespie Park Elementary School.  WXII 12
  • Residents, business owners and visitors in south Greensboro are invited to help shape the South Greensboro Plan at the city's final workshop, which will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16 at Allen Middle School — the event will focus on housing and the economy and give participants a chance to share their views.  Rhino Times
  • On August 7, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners approved the rezoning of roughly 21 acres near Triple Lakes—from an Agricultural designation to Conditional Zoning RS-40—allowing more homes to be built. The decision came despite local residents voicing concerns about traffic, safety, and environmental impacts, and it supports ongoing efforts to address a housing shortage.  Rhino Times
  • Guilford County property owners will see new tax values on Jan. 1, 2026, with estimates suggesting an average rise of about 48 percent and homes possibly increasing close to 50 percent if rates stay unchanged. Homeowners can contest their new values informally before appealing to the review board (hearings often start in April).  Rhino Times
