COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Guilford County Family Justice Center is hosting its annual Camp HOPE, an overnight camp where 60 children impacted by violence learn teamwork and gain hope—activities include horseback riding and crossbow shooting. The free program is funded by community partners and donors and is supported by dedicated volunteers.  ABC45
  • A Simple Gesture will use a $50,000 grant to expand its programs—Green Bag Recovery, Food Recovery and SHARE—to help more local residents. The organization plans to use the funds to increase service capacity in the community.  WFMY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students across the triad are getting ready for a new school year as summer ends, and most traditional schools will begin on Monday, August 25 while some year-round and charter schools started earlier.  ABC45
  • Dr. Nicholas Kochmanski (an assistant professor at UNCG) received competitive funding from the Gates Foundation to boost instructional coaching for math teachers in Guilford County and will work over the next two years with teachers and coaches (using easy-to-use classroom measures) to improve learning outcomes.  UNCG
  • Guilford County Schools has set up the SHARE program where students can place any excess unopened cafeteria food in a designated refrigerator for other students to take—this effort aims to ease food insecurity.  WFMY

  • The City of Greensboro’s People — Culture Department released its 2024-2025 Impact Report on Aug. 11, detailing new employee programs that include a personal observance leave and a Wellness Premium to support healthier lifestyles. The report also noted technology upgrades with artificial intelligence and a REACH professional development event aimed at improving employee experience and retention.  Rhino Times
  • Guilford County Deputy Attorney Matthew Mason retired today after nearly 20 years of service and received heartfelt praise at a board meeting. He handled key roles in tax programs and interim legal work—his dedication and kindness marked his long career in county government.  Rhino Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • ACA health plans will cost much more in 2026 when federal help ends, and experts say a Charlotte couple’s bill may jump from $580 to over $2,100 per month — up to 300,000 people could lose their plans if insurers raise rates. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is reviewing the rate increase requests to make sure they follow the rules.  WFMY
