- ➤ Community members—friends and city officials—gathered at the downtown ballpark to honor former Mayor Jim Melvin, who passed away on Aug 11 at age 91; his celebration of life will be held Wednesday at West Market Street United Methodist Church. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, Guilford County Schools opened the new Kiser Middle School at 716 Benjamin Parkway with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m.—the building replaces a nearly 70-year-old school and features updated furniture, large windows, STEM labs, open learning spaces, and a gym that seats 1,300—students will begin classes next week. - ➤ Kiser Middle School held a ribbon cutting on Monday at 716 Benjamin Parkway in Greensboro—its new building is part of Guilford County Schools’ $2 billion bond plan that will upgrade additional schools before the new term begins. WXII 12
- ➤ Today, Nancy Hoffmann will honor her late husband by creating an endowment that funds art programs—such as guest speaker stipends and student exhibitions—at the Weatherspoon Art Museum. The gift will help make the museum more visible to the Greensboro community and support art learning at UNCG. UNCG
- ➤ A new study by UNC Greensboro shows that quick high-intensity interval exercise helps students improve their verbal comprehension scores and reduce the stress of making mistakes—researchers had children ages 9 to 12 do moves such as high knees and jumping jacks that can be done in the classroom. - ➤ Director Catherine Johnson is leaving her role at the Guilford County Family Justice Center on Sept. 5 to become president and CEO of Alliance for HOPE International—she led the center into a nationally recognized model over nearly a decade. County leaders now face finding a successor who can uphold the center's comprehensive services for abused residents. Rhino Times
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ North Carolina has launched its first Mobile Opioid Treatment Program unit this month—operated by Morse Clinics—to bring treatment directly to communities that struggle with access to fixed-location clinics. The state plans to add up to ten more mobile units before the end of the year to reduce wait times and expand access for those needing care. Rhino Times
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ City leaders in Greensboro broke ground on a new affordable housing project on Vandalia Road that will create 16 permanent supportive housing units with rents from $127 to $768 by 2027. The project is part of the Road to 10K initiative to add 10,000 homes and create 61 jobs—Urban Ministries and Councilwoman Tammi Thurm stress the need for similar developments citywide. ABC45
