  • A Greensboro woman died after being hit by a car while riding her electric scooter — police identified her as Brittany Danielle McDuffie, 25.  News & Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Greensboro-born pastor David Tildon McGee remains entangled in his weapons and drugs case—he was arrested in Las Vegas a year ago when police found an assault rifle, body armor and fentanyl in his hotel room—and his trial is postponed to September.  News & Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today is the first day of school in Guilford County as students return to new classrooms at Peeler-Hampton Visual and Performing Arts and Kiser Middle School—both facilities built with funds from a $2 billion bond project renovation. The new $40 million Peeler-Hampton school, named to honor schools lost in the 2018 tornado, offers modern spaces for dance, music and design—supporting a fresh start for local students.  WXII 12
  • Professor Nir Kshetri from UNCG's Bryan School of Business and Economics received a Fulbright award and will begin research in Nepal in January, looking at how AI might change higher education in developing countries — he will also update his cybersecurity management courses to help students understand global cyber policies. Recognized for over 20 years in cybersecurity, he plans to use his findings to improve his international business curriculum.  UNCG
  • The YMCA of Northwest N.C. has renewed its teen membership referral program to offer free school-year access for youth ages 11 to 18 during the 2025-26 school year.  News & Record
  • Gov. Josh Stein signed House Bill 959 that restricts cell phone use and mandates social media literacy lessons for public schools—psychologist Mitch Prinstein said the changes may boost academic achievement and help students emotionally. School districts must submit device policies to the Department of Public Instruction by Sept. 1 and implement them by Jan. 1.  WXII 12
