  • Trees in LeBauer Park now carry purple ribbons as part of the Paint the Parks Purple campaign in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 31. Mary Houser (lead coordinator with the Greensboro Community Safety Department) said the ribbons aim to alert residents to the dangers of fentanyl and opiate overdoses and guide them toward available help.  News & Record
  • The Central Carolina Fair has been open at Greensboro Complex since Aug 29 and will run through Sept 14 — it features more than 26 rides and attractions, classic fair treats, and a 90-foot drop tower. Organizers said special promotions, including free opening admission and discounted rides on Sept 4 and Sept 11, will add to the family fun.  WXII 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The North Carolina Department of Transportation ranked Greensboro tied with Charlotte as the second-worst city for vehicle crashes based on data through 2024 while Winston-Salem ranked fifth. Local officials said high speeds on major routes like I-40 contributed to severe outcomes with 123 fatal crashes recorded — a situation that will prompt efforts to improve road safety.  News & Record
  • On Aug. 28 at 1:30 p.m., a Ford pickup failed to yield when turning from Lakeview Cemetery onto U.S. 29 and was hit by a tractor-trailer hauling a tanker—causing chlorine bleach to leak and prompting both drivers to be taken to a local hospital, with the pickup's driver in critical condition.  WXII 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Bard is wrapping up its final week of shooting and has employed over 500 local cast members and 200 crew to tell the story of poet George Moses Horton—filming took place in Greensboro and nearby towns. The film project highlights North Carolina’s support for local talent and vendors.  WFMY

  • STEM Early College at NC A&T ranks No. 2 among 822 public high schools in U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 Best High Schools list for the fourth year in a row. The selective program on campus admits top Guilford County students who often move on to study at NC A&T or other top universities.  WFMY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday evening, residents at the Barber Park Event Center in Greensboro voiced deep concerns about federal budget cuts that are set to remove $32 billion in Medicaid funding over the next decade—local speakers warned that the cuts will also affect food assistance, education, healthcare and clean energy programs.  Carolina Peacemaker

HEALTH NEWS

  • On August 28, Greensboro launched its Paint the Parks Purple campaign in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day by tying purple ribbons to trees in LeBauer Park, Center City Park, and on the grounds of the Melvin Municipal Office Building. Mary Houser from the Community Safety Department said the free program (city and grant-funded) offers harm reduction services (including safe supplies and peer support) and will help educate the public ahead of tomorrow.  WFDD

  • A&T, led by coach Shawn Gibbs, is set to face rival Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m. today at Nissan Stadium in Nashville—this game begins a new era as the team looks to reverse recent struggles.
