COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at Koury Convention Center, the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce celebrated local economic investments and leadership at its State of Our Community luncheon—over 1,000 people attended while JetZero CEO Dan da Silva outlined plans for a new advanced manufacturing facility that will create more than 14,500 jobs. The event also recognized achievements in education and workforce development by awarding community leaders who are shaping Greensboro’s future.  Carolina Peacemaker

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The SECU annual meeting will be held Oct. 14 at Greensboro’s Koury Convention Center with a slate of four board candidates—incumbents Chris Ayers and Ben McLawhorn, former board member Thomas Parrish, and newcomer Nneamaka 'Amaka' Flynn—running for four three-year seats. SECU said no self-nomination requests were received and a livestream will be available for members.  News & Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Thomas—an inductee to the 2025 Theater Hall of Fame—will star in a new production of Mark Twain Tonight! at the Tanger Center in Greensboro on February 19; tickets went on sale Friday, September 5.  YES! Weekly
  • Skip Alston, chair at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, shared that Joseph McNeil, a member of the Greensboro Four, made brave choices that continue to inspire many today.  WFMY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cone Elementary School in Greensboro dismissed students at noon today due to a major plumbing issue that forced the school to shut off its power. Lunch was provided before buses left at noon and staff stayed until all students were picked up—classes will resume on Monday.  ABC45

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a Sept. 4 closed session, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners discussed awarding a $1,164,760 incentive grant for Project McKinley — a plan expected to attract a $77M investment and create 420 jobs by December 31, 2027. The board set a public hearing on Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Old Guilford County Court House to get public input on the proposal.  Rhino Times
  • Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan stood by police after reviewing full body camera footage of a May traffic stop that sparked public outcry for changes—she said the officers acted based on a shots-fired call and suspicious vehicle behavior.  WFDD

SPORTS NEWS

  • Head coach Shawn Gibbs said his Aggies lost 24-21 to Tennessee State after misplays led to fumbles and a blocked 38-yard field goal. Gibbs said his team will face UCF next Saturday at 7 p.m. in Orlando—where a strong opponent will test them.  Carolina Peacemaker
