COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, Mount Pisgah Church celebrated its 180th anniversary with a special outdoor service — the church first opened in 1845 as a one-room Methodist building when Greensboro was much smaller. Senior Pastor Jeff Johnson said the historic service showed that even as the city grew, the church continues to link many generations.  WXII 12
  • The Greensboro Elks Lodge held its annual Tunnel to Towers fundraiser just ahead of the Sept. 11 anniversary to honor first responders and support local causes—since 2020, the event has raised over $100,000 with 93% of the funds aiding gold star families and homeless veterans. The fundraiser also paid a special tribute to Officer Michael Horan to remember those who lost their lives in service.  WXII 12

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash with serious injuries closed Burlington Road between I-840 E ramp — I-840 W ramp, police said, and Guilford County EMS responded at 10:13 a.m.—one person sustained serious injuries with no word yet on the cause or when the road will reopen.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four candidates are running for Greensboro’s open mayoral seat — former mayor Robbie Perkins, council member Marikay Abuzuaiter, ex-judge Mark Cummings and business consultant Akir Khan — while early voting will begin Sept 18, the primary will be held Oct 7 and the general election will take place Nov 4.  News & Record

SPORTS NEWS

  • Family and friends gathered on Saturday at Northeast Park in Gibsonville to honor Diondre Overton on the one-year anniversary of his death with a sports event featuring a basketball tournament, flag football, and a chess competition. Overton, a Page High graduate and former Clemson wide receiver who played for the USFL, was shot during a Greensboro party on September 7th and authorities arrested a suspect in 2024—further details about that night remain under review.  WFMY
