- ➤ A Greensboro volunteer, Susan Steed—who served the American Red Cross for 13 years—helped hurricane victims after Helene and spent two months in a key logistical role across North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Her Salute to Heroes award ceremony will be held on Sept. 18 at Second Harvest Food Bank headquarters in Winston-Salem. WXII 12
- ➤ Joseph McNeil, a civil rights pioneer and one of the A&T Four who served as a KC-135 navigator during Vietnam War, passed away on September 4 at age 83 — his life inspired the Greensboro sit-ins. The community held memorial services at North Carolina A&T and in Wilmington, and today a final service will be held at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to honor his legacy. - ➤ GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art announced that acclaimed artist Tara Thacker will open her solo exhibition at the Betty and Benjamin Cone Jr. ALCOVE Gallery on September 18 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.—the exhibit features her avian-inspired ceramic and mixed-media works and honors community arts leader Betty Cone with free admission and light refreshments. - ➤ Greensboro is set to gain more affordable homes as funding from the 2025 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit awards supports two projects—Grayson at Randleman Crossing will provide 84 units at 2813 Randleman Road and Overland Place Apartments will add 48 units at 3808 Overland Heights. Construction will begin in 2026 with city bond money helping to secure the developments. Rhino Times
- ➤ The Guilford County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Oct. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Meeting Room of the Old Guilford County Court House in downtown Greensboro to review proposed schedules, standards & rules for the 2026 property tax reappraisal process that will guide how property values are set. The hearing will give property owners a chance to comment before new assessments—expected to boost home values significantly—are finalized. Rhino Times

- ➤ A Greensboro dental surgery center on Hickory Ridge Drive has been ordered to stop using three new procedure rooms after state inspectors uncovered 23 safety violations—including improper wiring, missing nurse emergency call systems, and suspected leaks in vacuum lines—that led to a cease-and-desist order. Valleygate Dental Surgery Center said the rooms are not in use and that corrections will be completed with a reinspection planned by next week—while police continue investigating the death of a 2-year-old following a procedure. - ➤ Last Saturday, UCF returned the kickoff for a 96-yard touchdown and won 68-7 after a 75-minute weather delay while A&T lost three quarterbacks to injuries.
