CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Our State magazine released its largest issue in a 90-year history—a 280-page special edition that focuses on community recovery after Helene. The issue features a beekeeper donating bee boxes and fields in Swannanoa blooming with tulips, showing that nature and people can rebuild after loss. WFMY
- ➤ On September 23, students and local leaders gathered at UNCG’s Elliott Center in Greensboro to honor slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot on September 10 while speaking in Utah—U.S. Rep. Addison McDowell called Kirk a friend and urged the community to share bold ideas inspired by his legacy. News & Record
- ➤ Residents in the Triad can enjoy a busy week of cultural events from Sept 26 to Sept 28 including a free Hanesbrand show during Winston-Salem Fashion Week, Bookmarks’ annual Festival of Books and Authors, and live music by Souljam in Winston-Salem. In Greensboro, community members can join National Dance Day at LeBauer Park, the Downtown Greenway Run and Block Party at LoFi Park, karaoke with Courtney Chandler at Grandover Resort’s 19 and Timber Bar, and a Greek Festival with food and performances — all offering family-friendly celebrations. - ➤ UNCG was named the best university for social mobility in North Carolina for the seventh year in a row by U.S. News and World Report — a rank that shows its role in helping students and families improve their lives — and it climbed to No. 13 nationally with 80 awards from ranking groups. The accolades were announced on September 24th, reflecting the university’s steady progress. UNCG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Early voting in Greensboro and Jamestown municipal primaries ran smoothly with ballots processed on schedule. County Elections Director Charlie Collicutt said turnout was low and only one complaint was received about a campaign helper allegedly pressuring voters — staff are following up on the issue. - ➤ Today, the City of Greensboro is making voting easier by offering free first-hour parking at downtown decks near the Guilford County Courthouse — a benefit for early voters. The Greensboro Transit Agency will run free buses on election days, and officials are improving parking and allowing voters to stay in their cars at the Old Guilford County Court House while limiting roadwork near polling places. - ➤ Samuel Hunter was appointed as Greensboro's new housing strategy and development director and he is boosting transparency and community engagement as his office works on the Road to Ten Thousand initiative to add 10,000 new homes by 2030. As of yesterday, 1,791 new homes are under construction or finished and Hunter plans to work closely with developers and federal contacts to speed development. WXII 12

- ➤ Cone Health received state approval to build a new hospital in Mebane; the 46-bed, $250 million facility will include 15 emergency departments & cover 161,000 square feet on Medical Park Drive and is set to open by 2029. WXII 12
