COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network in Stokesdale began sheltering animals after Hurricane Helene one year ago and now cares for four animals available for adoption—two dogs and two horses. The non-profit will also support mountain rescue ranches as it prepares for rising needs later this fall and winter.  WFMY
  • After Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina a year ago, Baptists on Mission in Greensboro rebuilt 512 homes and kept sending food and supplies from its warehouse—helping residents slowly recover. The group expects work to last five more years and invites skilled tradespeople to volunteer.  WFMY
  • The Arielle Parker Foundation will host the Hope Beyond Heartache summit, a free event that offers coping tools and community support for those dealing with loss; the conference runs from *10 a.m. to 3 p.m.* on *Oct. 18* at Grace United Methodist Church on Friendly Avenue. Guest speakers such as Rev. Darryl Owens will share guidance to help attendees work through their grief.  News & Record

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local singer, songwriter, and producer Guy Smith and 14 local artists created an album—The Flood: Music for Manna—to raise funds for Manna Food Bank after storm Helene destroyed its headquarters and warehouse. They performed the album live on May 4 at White Horse Black Mountain and the event brought the community together to support those in need.  WXII 12
  • Two Triad restaurants were named on Southern Living's list of the 50 best barbecue joints in the South—Stamey's Barbecue in Greensboro placed at #24 while Lexington Barbecue earned the #10 ranking. Both restaurants have served Piedmont-style barbecue using a vinegar-based tomatoey dip for over 50 years.  WXII 12

  • Truist has expanded its deposit market share over Wells Fargo in the Triad area after BB&T Corp.'s headquarters moved from Winston-Salem to Charlotte in December 2019—this shift has made the market more competitive.  News & Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNCG Dining Services celebrated National Food Service Workers Day on Sept. 25 by sharing stories from hardworking staff who manage early morning setups and busy lunch orders — they also remembered longtime team member Mildred Jordan for her lasting impact on campus care.  UNCG
  • At a two-day artificial intelligence conference at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro that began on Thursday and continues today, professors from Johnson C. Smith University are addressing how AI may show racial bias when built from non-diverse data. They have also introduced a new course to train responsible AI curators — a move aimed at ensuring fairness in AI.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP benefits will soon require Greensboro recipients to work or go to school to get food help—new rules apply to households with dependents over 14, veterans and homeless under 64, and foster kids aged 18 to 24, which may affect about half a million in North Carolina before the end of the year.  WFMY
  • Greensboro announced Tory Frink as the new city clerk effective Oct 1. Frink—who served 15 years in Alamance County—will manage meeting agendas and public records and earned strong praise from City Manager Trey Davis.  Rhino Times

  • A 2-year-old named Er'Mias Mitchell died at a Greensboro dental surgery center in July—his family is still looking for answers as the cause of death remains under investigation.  WFMY
