Good morning, Greensboro. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 3rd of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Greensboro residents are advised to shred items like credit card offers, receipts, and bank statements according to safe timelines to protect against identity theft—important documents like birth certificates and W-2s should be kept. An event on Tuesday, October 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Complex will allow people to safely dispose of up to three bags or boxes of personal documents, and it is not a recycling event.  WFMY
  • The Children's Home Society of North Carolina holds its Adoption Journeys Support Group virtually every second Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.—where adoptive families talk and help each other handle the ups and downs of adoption.  WXII 12
  • Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina said record demand is already stretching its capacity and warned that if a prolonged federal shutdown occurs, the agency will have to tap its limited reserves—since SNAP provides nine times the support food banks can offer. CEO Eric Aft noted that this gap could stress services across 18 counties.  WFDD

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Westerwood neighborhood will host Art & Sole on October 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as a free, self-guided walking tour where 29 local artists offer their work for sale; parking is available at Mimosa & Fairmont and at Friendly Ave with bathrooms at Lake Daniel Park.  YES! Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Carolina awaits Gov. Josh Stein's decision on House Bill 307—known as Iryna's Law—which would restart the death penalty by requiring appeals be heard within two years and expanding execution methods to include firing squad, nitrogen hypoxia or electrocution if lethal injection drugs are unavailable. The measure could affect 122 people on death row and change cashless bail rules for violent offenders.  WFMY
  • The Guilford County Black Caucus is hosting two public forums in October so Greensboro voters can hear directly from municipal election candidates. The first forum is on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum—featuring mayoral and at-large candidates—while the second on Oct. 15 will focus on Districts 1 through 5.  Rhino Times
  • Both westbound lanes on the 4100 block of West Friendly Avenue between Starmount Drive and Westminster Drive are closed due to a 16 inch water main break that cut off water for about 25 customers—city crews say repairs will allow lanes to reopen and water service to be restored by midnight.  ABC45
