  • A teacher’s assistant at Irving Park Elementary saved a choking student today — Tammy Cuthrell said she acted in the nick of time without thinking about it.  News & Record

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologists said in August there is a 50% chance for an above-average Atlantic hurricane season in 2025 even though nine named storms have formed so far—Tropical Storm Chantal caused deadly flooding in North Carolina with six fatalities and rising swells in Buxton damaged nine homes. Additional storms may develop before the season ends on Nov. 30.  WXII 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Josh Stein signed House Bill 307, known as Iryna's Law, into law on October 3 to end cashless bail for violent offenders and speed up death penalty appeals; the bill also directs him to find a plan to restart execution—stalled since 2006 after Iryna Zarutska's fatal stabbing in Charlotte in August.  WXII 12
  • Guilford County homeowners urged the Board of Commissioners at a public hearing yesterday to adopt a revenue—neutral tax rate that would keep property taxes unchanged during the revaluation process. The next reappraisal is set for early next year with a new budget and tax rate expected by July 1.  WFDD
  • The U.S. government shut down at midnight last night and many federal workers in the Triad now face missed paychecks and delays in services like WIC, passport processing, and court cases. Piedmont Triad International Airport continues to operate but local agency work may be postponed — programs and contracts are disrupted.  Rhino Times
  • Candidates Akir Khan, Marikay Abuzuaiter, Mark Cummings and Robbie Perkins explained why they want to be Greensboro's next mayor and shared their visions for improving local government—each candidate emphasized a commitment to addressing community challenges.  WFMY
  • Residents of South Greensboro met with city officials and water department representatives at East Market Seventh Day Adventist Church on W. Vandalia Road on September 30 to discuss murky tap water that has troubled households for over a year. City leaders said targeted flushing and repairs will begin in southwest Greensboro soon and extend to southeast and south Greensboro by next year — officials promised regular testing and updates.  Carolina Peacemaker

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in the Triad are offering free flu shots at local health departments and pharmacies — anyone aged 6 months and up can get a quick shot with no appointment needed to help prevent severe flu this season.  WXII 12
  • Studies at MIT and among doctors show that overusing AI can weaken basic thinking skills. Greensboro physician Dr. Bland said on his radio show It’s a Matter of Your Health that schools and hospitals must work hard to keep human skills sharp—using AI wisely is key.  Carolina Peacemaker
  • On Saturday, October 11, the Triad Area Out of the Darkness Project will host its annual Community Walk at Triad Park in Kernersville—bringing together volunteers, survivors, and families to raise awareness for suicide prevention with scheduled wreath ceremonies, vendor visits, and a survivor walk. Organizers also encourage participants to bring a photo for a memory wall and donate nonperishable food for a Greensboro food bank.  Rhino Times
