- ➤ A hornbill chick arrived at Greensboro Science Center after emerging from its sealed nest last week— it hatched in early August and will soon be on display for visitors. WFMY

- ➤ Zach Martin, a 26-year-old on the autism spectrum, left his McDonald’s job last Friday to start a TikTok shop selling handmade woodland-themed ornaments and cards that earned $23,000 in sales in six weeks (he will show his new art Friday, November 7 from 6-8 p.m. at Richmond Hill City Center in JF Gregory Park). GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ North Carolina officials announced that a state program wiped out more than $6.5 billion in medical debt for over 2.5 million residents by giving hospitals extra Medicaid funds if they offered debt relief, which surpassed earlier estimates. Many hospitals have already informed patients their debt is canceled—Undue Medical Debt will send notices to 255,000 more people soon. WFDD
- ➤ On Monday, Greensboro’s transit agency unveiled three new transportation projects—a paratransit bus for riders with disabilities, an electric bus for sustainability and an on-demand micro-transit service called Flex Connect that lets customers reserve rides via an app, website or phone. Transit director Reginald Mason said the new buses will begin rolling out later this week. WXII 12
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Guilford County’s first live-in rehab center—Reverend Prince Edward Graves Recovery and Treatment Center—is nearing completion on Lees Chapel Road after nearly $10 million in total investment and renovations in the former St. Gale’s Manor Assisted Living building, and it will open in January to serve up to 54 residents battling addiction and homelessness. County leaders and Daymark Recovery Services plan to use the facility as a first step toward more comprehensive long-term recovery programs. ABC45

- ➤ Early Tuesday morning, the Yanceyville Apartment Complex completed 84 affordable units and broke ground on phase two with plans for an additional 60 units in Greensboro as part of the city's Road to 10,000 initiative by 2030 — Mayor Nancy Vaughan attended the ceremony to show support for the project funded by public and private sources.
