If you water your yard in Greensboro, the rules are now mandatory. The city is moving to Stage Two restrictions after voluntary cuts didn't bring water use down enough, and WXII says it's the first stage-two restriction in over 20 years.

  • No city trash service or multiple pickup days: Wednesday
  • Hand or drip watering of plants, shrubs and trees: any day
  • Violators: could face fines

Golf courses and institutional playing fields must cut water use 40% compared with the same billing period last year.

Golf courses may water only from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Greensboro is also buying water. “Almost a third of our demand comes from our regional partners,” Water Resources Director Mike Borchers said, naming Reidsville, Burlington and the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority. The city is looking at transferring some water from Lake Higgins into Lake Brandt. Rain Wednesday left minimal impact, WXII says, and Borchers said it would take several inches to refill the lakes.
