If you've followed the data center debate, here's where it landed. Guilford County commissioners unanimously approved an 18-month moratorium on new data center development Thursday in Greensboro. They had first discussed a shorter pause, but residents at public hearings pushed for a much longer one. WFMY also reported the unanimous vote.

“We want to be able to get it right the first time, not to come back and say we rushed into it or we even took too long.”

Skip Alston, chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners
  • Old pause: 180 days, in effect until Feb. 14, 2027
  • Residents' ask: 32 months
  • Residents' focus: clean water, fresh air, quality of life

The longer pause gives the county time to review its approach and decide how data centers should be regulated.
